January is Thyroid Awareness Month

Find me on:

As January brings in the New Year, it’s also the beginning of Thyroid Awareness Month.

Few people understand how important the thyroid is to their overall health. The thyroid produces hormones that control each person’s metabolism, how fast their heartbeat is, and a patient’s energy level. There are lots of scenarios that can influence thyroid health, such as exposure to radiation, certain medications, or a family history of thyroid problems.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, 1 in 8 women will develop thyroid problems during their lifetime, a rate almost ten times that of men. Not only that, but thyroid cancer is about three times more common in women than it is in men. Thyroid problems aren’t transient issues for women; they can create a lifetime of complications, including challenges conceiving and ongoing issues for both mother and baby during pregnancy.

Since ultrasound has no radiation, it is a safe and affordable option to check the thyroid and neck tissue to make sure issues aren’t arising. If you have a family history of thyroid diseases, swollen thyroid nodules, or any other issues, have your medical provider contact New Frontier at (913) 428-9488 to schedule your thyroid screening [CPT code 76536] today.
